Leeds Philharmonic Society is one of the leading choirs in the North of England, performing to professional standards with internationally renowned soloists, orchestras and conductors. We have a long and distinguished History.
Since it was founded in 1870 the Leeds Philharmonic Society
has given concerts in Leeds Town Hall. Many of these have been conducted by the distinguished musicians
who have held the post of Music Director, including
Sir Edward Bairstow, Meredith Davies, Sir Charles Groves,
Richard Hickox,
Sir Charles Mackerras, Sir Malcolm Sargent and Sir Charles Villiers Stanford.
In addition, over the years, many other prominent musicians have directed concerts including Sir Thomas Beecham, Sir Edward Downes,
Sir Alexander Gibson and Sir Georg Solti. More recently, Martyn Brabbins, Paul Daniel,
Alexander Dmitriev,
Ivan Fischer, Vernon Handley, Owain Arwel Hughes,
Andrew Litton, Steven Sloane, Yan Pascal Tortelier and
Sir David Willcocks
have conducted concerts in which the Chorus has taken part.
The Chorus has been fortunate in having a number of highly effective choral trainers
occupying the post of Chorus Master and the present Chorus Master,
Jill Henderson Wild,
was appointed in 1997.
The Chorus is also delighted to have the privilege of working with Conductor
David Hill as its Choral Director since May 2005.
As well as the series of concerts in Leeds Town Hall, the Chorus has performed in many other venues including the Royal Albert Hall, London, Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, Symphony Hall Birmingham and The Sage Gateshead.
